Fighting to End Racist Gerrymandering: Florida Rising
Florida Rising works to increase the political voice and well-being of communities of color and build multiracial unity across Florida through issue campaigns, including those on democratic rights, criminal justice reform, climate, gender, housing, and immigrant justice.
In May 2023, the Jacksonville City Council agreed to settle a federal lawsuit charging that the city had long deployed an unconstitutional, racially gerrymandered voting district map that denied Black voters fair representation in local elections.
Rapid Response Fund grantee Florida Rising was one of the ten plaintiffs in the settlement which resulted in a new redistricting map that will be created with insight from experts, activists, and citizens – a critical step toward ensuring fair representation for the city’s Black residents. Florida Rising is a statewide grassroots organization working to build power in Black and Brown communities to advance economic and racial justice across Florida.
