Sheena Johnson

Senior Director of Grantmaking

Sheena brings over a decade of experience working at the intersection of arts, organizing, and philanthropy as an accomplished artist-activist and effective non-profit leader and consultant. She is excited to bring her passion for building power in marginalized communities and communities of color to her role as the Senior Director of Grantmaking at Groundswell Fund.

Previous to her position at Groundswell, Sheena served as the Vice President of Programs and Partnerships at Organize Florida where she stewarded statewide efforts to advance wins on key issues such as Housing, Climate, and Reproductive Justice. Prior to moving to Florida, Sheena served as program staff at two foundations in California — the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Akonadi Foundation.

During her time with the Hewlett Foundation, Sheena managed a multi-year audience research initiative and developed a learning community of 50 grantees focused on issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion in the arts. At the Akonadi Foundation, Sheena managed the Beloved Community Fund that supported arts and culture projects that advanced healing, racial justice, and belonging for communities of color in Oakland, CA.

Sheena holds a BA from Swarthmore College in political science and peace and conflict studies, and an MFA from Mills College in dance emphasis choreography. She is a proud mama of an awe-inspiring eight-year-old and values all the time she can get with dear ones and family.
