Black Youth 100 North Carolina Chapter: Durham Beyond Policing
Black Youth Project 100 had major wins in the Durham county budget meeting in North Carolina in June 2021.
The meeting approved a budget that will divest funds from police departments and reallocate them into Durham schools.
The budget will also ensure that there is at least one school nurse and counselor in every school.
Organizers and community members did a lot of the groundwork to make this possible. Through phone banking, the campaign had over 700 conversations with people of color in Durham. From those that were contacted over 70% supported the demands of the campaign by the end of the conversation.
